Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is on the trajectory of becoming the leading cause of blindness worldwide. The epidemic is prevalent in east and Southeast Asia where 80% to 90% of high school students are myopic and the incidence of this condition is increasing worldwide. This drastic rise in myopia is attributed to the change of lifestyle affecting our children’s development. Nowadays, kids spend much more time indoors staring at digital screens that are up close, as opposed to allowing for necessary development of our visual system by spending hours playing outdoors in the sunlight. The covid-19 pandemic has not helped either, as many people around the world increased their time spent in front of digital screens. Nearsightedness is increasing globally, to the extent that at this rate it is projected that by 2050, it will affect 50% of the population around the world. We at Amplify EyeCare understand that this cannot be ignored and it is important for this matter to be discussed and addressed now.
